FAQ for IELTS

What is IELTS?

IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. It measures ability to communicate in English across all four language skills - listening, reading, writing and speaking - for people who intend to study, work or migrate where English is the language of communication. IELTS is the world’s most popular high stakes English-language test and accepted by more than 10,000 organisations worldwide. These include universities, immigration departments, government agencies, professional bodies and multinational companies. To search for a recognising institution, please use the IELTS Global Recognition System .

IELTS is available in two formats - Academic and General Training. In both formats, candidates are tested in listening, reading, writing and speaking. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking modules, but Academic and General Training formats have different Reading and Writing modules. The first three modules - Listening, Reading and Writing - must be completed in one day. Speaking interviews are usually conducted within 7 days before and after the written test. Under exceptional circumstances, speaking tests may be arranged outside the usual window period. The British Council reserves the right to make necessary adjustments to the test arrangement.

From September 2018, the computer-delivered IELTS will be launched in order to provide more options for IELTS test takers. The introduction of this new option will not affect the availability of paper IELTS tests.
The computer-delivered test will be exactly the same as paper-based IELTS for content, scoring, timing, level of difficulty, question format, and security arrangements. All test takers will receive the same Test Report Form. The computer-delivered IELTS includes Listening, Reading, and Writing. The Speaking test will continue to be face-to-face, as it is a more reliable indicator of communication. The computer-delivered IELTS will be available more times in a week. For more information, please visit IELTS website at https://www.chinaielts.org/about_ielts/what_is_ielts.shtml.

How do I decide whether to take the Academic or General Training module of the IELTS test?

The Academic IELTS assesses whether a candidate is ready to study or train in the medium of English at an undergraduate or postgraduate level. Admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses is based on the results of this format. Choose Academic if you plan to undertake further or higher education study abroad.

The General Training IELTS is not designed to test the full range of formal language skills required for academic purposes, but emphasizes basic survival skills in a broad social and educational context. General Training is suitable for candidates who are going to English speaking countries to complete their secondary education, to undertake work experience or training programmes not at degree level, or for immigration purposes. Choose General Training if you plan to complete secondary study, receive non-academic training, or work in / migrate to an English speaking country.

Which is more difficult, Academic IELTS or General Training IELTS?

The two modules are designed for different purposes and therefore the language skills required in the two modules are different.

Who owns IELTS?

IELTS is jointly owned by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment. IELTS registration in mainland China is only available on the NEEA (National Education and Examinations Authority) IELTS online registration website.

Who writes the IELTS test?

International teams of writers contribute to IELTS test materials. Ongoing research ensures that it remains fair and unbiased. Test writers from different English-speaking countries develop the test content so it reflects real-life situations.

How long is the IELTS test? What contents does the test cover?

The IELTS test includes:

  • Listening: 30 minutes plus 10 minutes for transferring answers to the answer sheet. Candidates listen to a number of recorded texts, which increase in difficulty as the test progresses. These include a mixture of monologues and conversations and feature a variety of English accents and dialects. The recording is heard only once, but candidates are given time to read the questions and record their answers.
  • Academic Reading: 60 minutes. There are three reading passages with tasks. Texts are taken from books, magazines, journals and newspapers, all written for a non-specialist audience. At least one of the texts contains a detailed argument.
  • General Training Reading: 60 minutes. The texts are based on the type of material candidates would be expected to encounter on a daily basis in an English speaking country. The texts are taken from sources such as newspapers, advertisements, instruction manuals and books, and test the candidate’s ability to understand and use information. The test includes one longer text, which is descriptive rather than argumentative.
  • Academic Writing: 60 minutes. For the first task, candidates write a report of at least 150 words based on material found in a table or diagram, demonstrating their ability to describe and explain data. For the second task, candidates write a short essay of at least 250 words in response to an opinion or a problem. They are expected to demonstrate an ability to discuss issues, construct an argument and use the appropriate tone and register.
  • General Training Writing: 60 minutes. The first task requires candidates to write a letter of at least 150 words either asking for information or explaining a situation. The second task is a short essay of at least 250 words, and is written in response to a given point of view or problem. Candidates are expected to be able to present their own ideas and challenge other ideas, using appropriate tone and register.
  • Speaking: 11-14 minutes. The test takes the form of a face-to-face interview. Candidates are assessed on their ability to respond to questions to speak at length on a familiar topic and their ability to interact with the examiner. Speaking interviews are usually conducted within 7 days before and after the written test. Under exceptional circumstances, speaking tests may be arranged outside the usual window period. The British Council reserves the right to make necessary adjustments to the test arrangement.

If I am under 11 years old, can I take the test?

A. No, you can not. IELTS measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication. IELTS is designed to help people apply for higher and advanced secondary education, as well as for professional and migration purposes. As such, the test covers topics and themes which are relevant to those subjects, which a young child would be unable to fully discuss or understand.
Furthermore, when we administer our test, we do so under strict testing conditions that are designed for adults. This usually means spending a long time sitting and writing and from our experience and international best practice on child learning, such an environment is not conducive to bringing out the best academic performance from a minor. As one of the world’s leading authorities on language assessment, we ensure that each and every candidate has the opportunity to take part in a fair and reliable test in which their proficiency can be accurately assessed. We therefore are unable to provide IELTS testing services for candidates under 11 years old.

Can I take the test again if I'm rejected because I presented a fake identity document or if it was discovered that I asked somebody else to do the test for me, or took the test for somebody else?

No, you can't take the test again. You are banned from taking any IELTS tests any more in future and will not be eligible for transfer, cancellation, or refund of any kind. The British Council reserves the right to inform recognizing organisations, relevant embassies and consulates-generals, law enforcement agencies, regulatory authorities, other test partners and test centres of such cases, and this may result in legal action.

What is the 'pass' score in IELTS?

Candidates receive scores on a Band Scale from 0 to 9. A profile score is reported for each skill. Overall Band Scores and scores for each sub-test (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) are reported in whole bands or half bands. There is no pass / fail grading system in the IELTS Tests. Universities / organizations / Embassies etc. set their own test score requirements.

How is my IELTS overall band score calculated?

The Overall Band Score is calculated by taking the mean of the total of the four individual sub-test scores. Each of the sub-test scores is equally weighted. Overall Band Scores are reported to the nearest whole or half band. For the avoidance of doubt, the following rounding convention applies; if the average across the four skills ends in .25, it is rounded up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75, it is rounded up to the next whole band.

Thus, a candidate achieving 6.5 for Listening, 6.5 for Reading, 5.0 for Writing and 7.0 for Speaking would be awarded an Overall Band Score of 6.5 (25 / 4 = 6.25 = Band 6.5).

Likewise, a candidate achieving 4.0 for Listening, 3.5 for Reading, 4.0 for Writing and 4.0 for Speaking would be awarded an Overall Band Score of 4.0 (15.5 / 4 = 3.875 = Band 4.0).

On the other hand, a candidate achieving 6.5 for Listening, 6.5 for Reading, 5.5 for Writing and 6.0 for Speaking would be awarded band 6 (24.5 / 4 = 6.125 = Band 6)
